In what ways did you alter the second one? I feel that the first one looks more natural, though you pull out more detail from the foreground, the closer trees, and the sky in the latter (which is nice). Not that you're looking for advice, but maybe somewhere between the two would be more ideal... at least from my conception of the scene, which could be totally different than you intended.

I just pulled the shadowing from the tress and dropped the highlighting on the sky and snow. I like both of them side-by-side, but for a single image, I agree an overlap would have been the best solution.
