Made entirely of local adobe clay, straw and donated paint, Salvation Mountain was created by local Niland resident, Leonard Knight, who has been building, painting and repainting since 1985. Naturally, one of the main reasons I wanted to visit Salvation Mountain was to visit Leonard, but unfortunately, Leonard no longer resides in Niland, which really bummed me out.
