Had I not been so cold, I would have sat there all night and photographed this giant-bubble-making machine. In fact, I plan on going back pretty soon with a fancy-pants lighting set-up to really get what I want. However, this is a decent start with uno speedlight.

I find it very fitting that my post for today, October 1st, 2010, is about a celebration of the people (and places) that make rock photography an important documentation of history and lifestyle.
Some of them are friends, some of them are icons, some of them are both.
So, happy two-year anniversary in this great city. Our relationship is very young, but I will always, always, always love it.

A night of some of my favorite people in my 2nd favorite place in New York, the Morrison Hotel Gallery on Bowery.

Meeting Pattie Boyd was like meeting both George Harrison and Eric Clapton at the same time. Ever hear Harrison's "Something"? Or Clapton's "Bell Bottom Blues" or perhaps even "Wonderful Tonight?"
Oh and THEN there was that little number, what was it called... umm...
think, think, think...
Oh! Yes!
"Layla"...
...
All of those songs, really, courtesy of the love each of those musicians had for this woman. All of them, but "Layla"?? Let's think about how it would feel to have been the one to inspire that song. Words, music, everything... just think about it...
I don't care if you prefer the rock-out electric version, the acoustic, unplugged version or really just dig the piano solo, but without Pattie Boyd, you wouldn't have the chance to sit with your friends and discuss, sometimes even fight about, the above on your Friday nights when someone flips "Layla" on the juke box.
And holy crap... I met Layla...

Concrete jungle where dreams are made of,
There's nothing you can't do,
Now you're in New York
These streets will make you feel brand new,
Big lights will inspire you,
Let's hear it for New York...*

Times Square? Confetti? Sweet song about New York? Celebrating, dudes, just celebrating.

*I should NOT be allowed to photograph these things professionally. That's the second time this sap got misty-eyed whilst shooting Broadway. For those not in the theater-know, however, the real gem from Wicked is "Defying Gravity" - so I thank goodness Ms. Gonzalez didn't bust that one out.
Haha, yeahhh... about that rock chick rep...

After wrapping up with my work at the Getty office on Varick following my BVLGARI shoot, I packed up my gear to head home. "Great," I thought, "The 1 train is right on Canal! Super easy to get home."
Wrong. No downtown 1 trains that night.
Fortunately, while I was in a dress and it was close to 1 a.m., I had packed flats in my camera bag just in case I felt like walking home from wherever I happened to end up. Yes, my gear weighs about as much as me these days, but the weather was impeccable. Walking it was.
Because I live downtown and often pass the World Trade Center site, my walks home can get pretty interesting - particularly on nights like September 10th into the early hours of the 11th.
I will be honest in saying that I was completely consumed in Fashion Week and chatting with one of my best friends on the west coast rather than thinking about 9/11, that is, until I stumbled upon this little motorcycle rally as I approached the WTC. Immediately hanging up with Shasta to un-sling my camera bag, I hopped up on one of the police barriers to get a better angle - dress and all.
Shockingly, the NYPD didn't care in the slightest that I was playing leap frog on their concrete barriers. Like Steve Manuel always used to say: Don't ever ask permission, just shoot until they tell you to stop.
So, I kept shooting. Hopping from concrete slab to concrete slab, the full, pleated 3/4-length A-line of my black cotton Calvin Klein dress unfolding with each leap, I waited for someone to tell me to stop, but no one ever did.
Very anti-climactic, I know, but strange as well.
Why didn't they ask me to stop?
